Dining with Foundation
Two directors attended the BV Foundation dinner to represent the BVCAC.
They had been invited because we received a grant from the Foundation
and were asked to speak at the dinner.
Della’s Monies in the Pot
The last of the funding finally
arrived for the ‘Gussy up Della’ Herman
Theatre. The technician from SD#54 finalized the quotes and ordered
the remaining equipment.
August /September
Copy Copy
Our resourceful president took the task in
hand and found us (BVCAC and members) a great deal on photocopying. We have been loaned the
copier for free and only pay for paper plus 2.5 cents per copy. This
is the best deal around and the news has been spread to our member
groups.
Calling all Python Freaks
Rehearsals began in September for our 7th Annual
Variety Show, which was a Monty Python theme for the second year. Two
performances
are scheduled this year as last year’s was such a huge success.
Treasurer Seeks Retirement
After 10 years of keeping
the books, our treasurer is trying to retire so she can keep up with
her other volunteer jobs and full time work....sounds
reasonable??? Recruitment has begun but it’s a hard position to fill
and a hard act to follow, as we have been lucky to have an actual accountant
and teacher doing the work.

Alcan Has Money in the Can
Directors and an art gallery
representative met with an arts assessment team hired by Alcan to investigate
potential places and projects supporting
the arts that they could provide funding for along Highway 16. After
2 hours of discussion of the arts programs, groups and services in
our community, this team promised to send us a copy of the report.
Alcan will hopefully take this information and dole out some much needed
and much welcomed cash for the many beneficial arts programs and initiatives.

Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge, Deja-vu
The 7th Annual
Variety show fundraiser was the most successful yet and featured part
2 of our Monty Python theme, “The Final Rip Off”. The
two sold out shows raised $7000 for our bursary fund.
Directors on Board
3 BVCAC directors attended
Gavin Perryman’s workshop “Building Healthy
Boards” on how to form a ‘board’ and many of the ideas will now be
incorporated into our meetings and agendas.
Yummy Mystery
We agreed to co-sponsor with the BV Players for a murder mystery dinner
at the Logpile Lodge in the spring.
La La La La La
$500 was awarded to Elaine
Edmison and Sharon Carrington for a vocal workshop along with guaranteed
deficit financing if required. This
allowed participants to pay only $120 for 2 days of vocal instruction.
Sundays at Central Park
$1500 was granted
to the Smithers Art Gallery as our contribution to fundraising for the “Central Park Sundays” program,
oriented to families and promoting the arts.
Stolen Monies
The BVCAC granted local bookstore and ticket sales agent $200 to help
recover the cost of arts events/concert ticket monies stolen from the
store.

Dance Student Gets Funding
A local 7-year girl whose
parents have recently lost work was granted monies to enable her to continue
dance lessons.
February 2002
It is all right, you can say vagina!
Directors shared
their directing and acting skills to the Northern Society for Domestic
Peace’s production of the Vagina Monologues. It
was a huge success.
You say you want a new constitution?
A director consulted with Positive Living Northwest to discuss
information regarding creating their society and constitution.
Foundation
Seeks Input
The Vancouver Foundation called our president to
discuss initiatives by members of the Arts Council. They were looking for third party
input before making a decision regarding the Art Gallery’s funding
request for Central Park Sundays.
March 2002
Band Monies
The BVCAC supported the Smither’s Community Band’s
fundraiser with a grant of $435 for theatre and sound system rental.
Calling All Actors
“You and Your Performance”, a workshop
for actors was supported by a grant of $600, enabling more participants
to afford to attend.
We admit it, sometimes we need help too!
The BVCAC hired a local contractor to assist the directors in working
on our charitable status application....a good example of an arts related
activity helping the local economy.
Website is Rolling Along
The BVCAC website funding is now in place and development of the arts
calendar will start soon. Funding was received through a grant from
the BC Arts Council.
April 2002
Who’s Touring?
A director was invited to attend the
meeting of Northwest Regional Touring Committee, comprised of reps from
Kitimat, Terrace, Prince
Rupert and Smithers. Discussions focused on entertainment groups that
will be touring the Highway 16 corridor. The BVCAC granted $150 towards
this meeting for supplies and coffee for the guests.
Another Student Receives Grant
One worthy applicant was awarded a $1000 bursary to go towards pursuing
post secondary education in visual arts.
Boosters Needed a Boost
The BVCAC agreed to assist the BV Band Boosters with over $7000 for
their trip with 37 Grade 7 band students to Calgary to participate
in the National Band Competition.
Helping Arts Activities to be Affordable
A Director
attended a meeting with 30 other community representatives to discuss
the Affordable Recreation program. He outlined our policies
and processes to assist low-income families and students to participate
in the arts.
June 2002
Momma Show a Repeat Success
The BVCAC supported local
moms who produced the “Momma Show”, consisting
of art by local moms by providing financial assistance of $300 for
arts supplies.
Helping Drama at the School
A director helped out the drama students
and teacher at Smithers Secondary School by repairing set pieces for
re-use. He also helped to re-organize
the trailer so sets could be stored and retrieved with ease.
Two Years of Work Pays Off!
After two years of application processes and working with Revenue
Canada, a Charitable status was granted to BVCAC.
Local Writer Gets Published Again!
A local writer was granted
funds to publish his second book – a history
of Telkwa High Road. He will be using a local printing business to
complete “all but the binding”.
